One significant concern affecting both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals is excessive insulin production.

When the body produces too much insulin, it triggers warning signs that should not be ignored. The pancreas, located beneath the left breast, plays a vital role in producing insulin, a hormone essential for reducing glucose levels and enabling glucose to enter cells. Insulin also supports muscle building.

Excess insulin can manifest through various visible signs. One common indicator is the appearance of skin tags or warts on the face, feet, and hands. The presence of numerous warts often suggests elevated insulin levels. Another condition associated with high insulin is acanthosis nigricans, characterized by dark, thickened patches of skin, typically found on the neck or armpits. This darkened skin has a leathery texture, indicating elevated insulin levels.

While doctors commonly order tests for fasting glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol, one crucial test is often overlooked: the fasting insulin test. This test measures the amount of insulin circulating in the blood at the start of the day. Excess insulin can lead to skin discoloration and the development of warts.

In women, high insulin levels can contribute to the formation of polyps on the ovaries and cysts in the breasts. Insulin’s anabolic properties promote tissue growth, leading to these formations. Similarly, cysts on the thyroid can also be linked to excess insulin. Many individuals have seen a reduction or disappearance of thyroid cysts by adopting a diet that lowers both glucose and insulin levels.

For an accurate assessment, it’s crucial to request a fasting insulin test. In the United States, this test is relatively inexpensive. While standard normal ranges may be broad (2 to 24 international units per milliliter), optimal levels are between 2 and 5 units per milliliter. Levels between 6 and 9 are acceptable, but anything above 10 indicates a problem. High insulin levels can lead to insulin resistance, hindering weight loss efforts.

Maintaining healthy insulin levels is critical for overall well-being. Diabetics with higher insulin levels tend to have shorter lifespans, and elevated insulin is linked to an increased risk of cancer due to its role in cell growth. By monitoring insulin levels and maintaining them within the optimal range, individuals can promote a healthier, happier, and longer life.
