Coffee for Hair Growth? The Truth!

Hair loss, or alopecia, affects both men and women and can manifest in different forms. Alopecia areata is often linked to the nervous system, triggered by traumatic events. Another common type, androgenic alopecia, is related to hormonal imbalances, particularly involving testosterone.

A 2012 study by Dr. Banzal and his team explored caffeine’s role in managing androgenic alopecia, revealing that topical application of coffee grounds may help stimulate hair regrowth. This is because caffeine can block the action of phosphodiesterase, an enzyme associated with hair loss. Phosphodiesterase converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which suppresses hair follicles and inhibits hair production.

To potentially combat hair loss, one can create a homemade coffee shampoo by mixing 3 tablespoons of regular shampoo with 2 teaspoons of ground coffee. Apply the mixture, let it sit for 2-3 minutes, and then rinse with lukewarm water. This can be done daily or up to three times per week. Applying a warm towel to the head after applying the shampoo can further stimulate circulation, potentially promoting hair follicle health.

Additionally, it’s important to manage stress and nervous system tension, as these factors can also contribute to hair loss.
