Contrary to popular belief, excess stomach acid isn’t usually the culprit behind acidity or heartburn. Scientific evidence suggests that the issue often stems from a lack of stomach acid. When food enters the stomach, its walls are meant to produce hydrochloric acid. This strong acid is crucial for breaking down proteins into usable amino acids. Instead of too much acid, the burning sensation and reflux are often signs of *insufficient* acid. When food isn’t properly digested due to low acid levels, it can putrefy in the stomach. This putrefaction generates acid, leading to discomfort and reflux. The key is to restore the stomach’s ability to produce adequate acid.

Adequate hydration plays a vital role in this process. The body uses water to create hydrochloric acid and sodium bicarbonate, essential for digestion and protecting the stomach lining. Sodium bicarbonate neutralizes the stomach acid. When the body receives enough water, it can effectively produce both hydrochloric acid and sodium bicarbonate, enabling proper digestion. Salt, composed of sodium and chloride, is also crucial. The body uses chloride to produce hydrochloric acid and sodium to create bicarbonate.

Common antacids, like proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Prilosec, Prevacid, and Nexium, work by inhibiting the stomach’s acid production. While this provides temporary relief, it hinders proper digestion and can lead to nutrient deficiencies. Studies have shown that PPIs can interfere with the absorption of vitamin B12, leading to fatigue, memory problems, and nervous system issues. Hydrochloric acid helps to separate the B12 from the protein.

To naturally address acidity, focus on hydration and sodium intake. Consuming enough water based on body weight is essential, along with incorporating a small amount of salt into the diet. One can aim for half a teaspoon of salt mixed with lemon juice in a glass of water twice daily. Lemon provides potassium and magnesium, helping to maintain healthy blood pressure. This approach provides the body with the necessary components to produce hydrochloric acid and sodium bicarbonate, promoting proper digestion and alleviating acidity.
